Betty Jane (Swyers) Merritt

Obituary

Betty Jane Merritt, 93, a resident of Ridgmont, formerly of 437 Allenhurst Avenue, Ridgway, PA, passed away Monday morning, August 3, 2020, at Pinecrest Manor.

 

Betty was born January 22, 1927, in Brockway, PA, daughter of William Harrison Swyers and Elizabeth (Yaun) Swyers.  On October 12, 1946, she married Arthur Addison Merritt, who preceded her in death on August 23, 2001.

 

A graduate of Brockway Senior High School, Betty enjoyed a varied career in the employ of Sylvania Emporium Division, IPM, Stackpole Carbon, and then working alongside her husband at Kinkaid’s Bakery and the Ridgway Area School District, from which they each retired.  Married 55 years, “Art & Betty” were famous for their perfect polka & beloved for hosting dinners & card games for their many friends & family alike.

 

She is survived by their three sons:  Larry Arthur Merritt (Gloria) of Rozet, Wyoming; James Addison Merritt (Jan) of Ridgway, PA; Kenneth William Merritt (Christine) of Ridgway, PA; and grandchildren: Tammy Kriegel (David) & her children Jenna Stenta (Aaron), Ethan Rowles, McKenna Rowles; Larry Wingate (Jodi) & his daughter Chelsea; Gary Wingate & his children Kristion & Kaitlin; David Merritt, Michael Merritt, Jeremy Merritt; Katie Simbeck & her daughters, Isabella Mae Simbeck & Emma Rose Simbeck; Odyssey Marshall (Aaron); Jessica Herzing (Tyree Jackson) & her children Logan & Sylas; and many nieces & nephews.

 

Besides her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by two brothers, William Swyers in infancy, Henry Harrison Swyers (Florence); and five sisters, Mary McCausland (James), Ruth Heatherdale (Thomas), Blanche Gardner (Walter), Mildred Swyers, Dorothy Swyers.

 

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, and in respect for her wishes, there will be no public viewing and no formal funeral services.  Internment is at Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Ridgway, PA.
