August 28, 1930 ~ February 27, 2021 (age 90)

Obituary

Dolores A. Dean, age 90, of 55 East Cardott St., Ridgway, died Saturday, February 27, 2021, at her residence.  She was born August 28, 1930, in Ridgway, daughter of the late B. Frank and Monica (Spleen) Dean.

Dolores was a teacher and a bicycle rider.  She traveled extensively but reunited with the area of her childhood, still loved it, found it fascinating, and thought it a privilege to live in this forested environment.  Her friends were her family.  She rejoiced in the good fortune of her students and mourned their sadnesses.  Before teaching in West Hartford, Connecticut and in Ridgway, she worked in advertising and television in New York City, Pittsburgh, Erie, and at the Ridgway Record.  After retiring from teaching, she developed and operated a business that designed and produced brochures and other marketing materials for industries.  She was a 1948 graduate of Ridgway High School.  She received a BA from Chatham College in Pittsburgh and an MA from Gannon University in Erie.  Her community service was on the boards of:  Elk County General Hospital, Dickinson Mental Health Center, Ridgway Public Library, Elk County Historical Society, Elk County Footlighters.  She was also an active worker at the Elk County Historical Society and a director, actor, and production person with the Footlighters.  She served on the Elk County Collegiate Center Board, was publicity chair for the United Fund and for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, did special marketing projects for the Ridgway Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Stackpole-Hall Foundation Search Committee (Education) for the Improvement of Elk County.  She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the American Cancer Society.

She is survived by many good friends and neighbors.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a cousin who made his home with them, Robert Spleen, killed in WW II, and her loving dog Molly.  Memorials can be made to the Good Samaritan Food Bank, Rails to Trails, or to the Ridgway Public Library.  A Celebration of Life for Dolores A. Dean will be held at a later date and time to be announced.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Thompson Funeral Home.  Share your online condolences at thompsonfuneralhomepa.com
