William L. Murnaghan, 92, a resident of Kane Lutheran Home and formerly of Dewey Circle, Ridgway, died Wednesday morning, October 10, 2018 at Kane Lutheran Home following a brief illness.
He was born on November 24, 1925, in Ridgway, a son of the late Henry and Cecilia Modenbaugh Murnaghan.
In May of 1949, he married Bernice Johnson Murnaghan, who preceded him in death on October 18, 2016 after more than 67 years of marriage.
Mr. Murnaghan was a lifelong resident of Ridgway and was a graduate of Ridgway High School. Always a dedicated volunteer, he was instrumental in the founding of the Fire Station on Montmorenci. He served as the treasurer for the Ridgway Fire Department for more than 30 years. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and spent a great deal of time as a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Zen Zen Shrine, and the Consistory in Coudersport. He was also a longtime member of the Elk County Historical Society. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Carns and her husband John of White Plains, MD, and Sarah Murnaghan of Ridgway. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Bryan, Jessica, and Rachel Smith, and Andrew, Charles, and Nathan Carns, by two great-grandchildren, Mykaela and Alex, a sister, Ann Price of Mississippi, and by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry, Paul, George, John, and Edward Murnaghan, and by four sisters, Kate Herzing, Rosemary Murnaghan, Edna Murnaghan, and Sr. Maurita Murnaghan.
Funeral Services for William L. Murnaghan will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 19 S. Broad Street, Ridgway, PA 15853 with Rev. Roger Peterson, Pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Thayer Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Thompson Funeral Home, 136 Center Street, Ridgway, PA 15853.
